A Stylized German Chanukah Lamp

A Stylized German Chanukah Lamp

0.00

Utilizing a Star of David as part of the design of the menorah itself, this sculpture-like example has nine petite candle holders at top, while the base has beveled edges, indicating that a high level of quality and artistry was put into making this lamp. The bold, striking design indicates the influences of the Bauhaus and Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity), two German art movements of the 1920’s of which they owe part of their design influence to Art Deco, although these design elements are more severe than that movement. We are not aware of other examples of this lamp ever being offered for sale or in the holdings of any museum worldwide. Made of metal. For another German metal Chanukah lamp done in the style of Neue Sachlichkeit, see Sotheby’s April 17, 2001 “Magnificent Judaica” sale, lot 233.
