A German Parcel-Gilt Silver Torah Shield

A German Parcel-Gilt Silver Torah Shield

Altenberg, 1826, fully marked. This densely decorated Torah shield is quite elaborate. It is hand-chased with berried foliage and palm branches between fluted columns wrapped with flowers. Eight removable portion plaques accompany this shield, and each fits the compartment below the Ten Commandments flanked by Lions of Judah. The lions are holding a crown below a floral wreath which has the Four Letter Name of G-d topped by a crown. The amount of labor put into this piece, along with the multiple design elements working so harmoniously with one another, means that the German congregation of 1826 who commissioned this Torah shield to be made must have been quite well off economically. It is a magnificent work of art.
