An English Spice Box

Made of brass pieces that have been expertly cut and shaped to appear in the form of a lectern, better known by the Yiddish shtender. On the lid of where a Yeshiva student would have his Talmud resting, three motifs have been pierced: a goblet, a lit candle, and vegetation. These images reflect what is used during the Havdallah ceremony, at the conclusion of the Sabbath. The lid opens so you can put spices in, and smell the spices through the open spaces of the Havdallah symbols. England, late 19th century. A unique artist piece.
