19th century, manufactured by J. Kauffmann, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Designed by E. Mannheimer. Printed on cloth. Hebrew excerpts from the Passover Hagadah abound, including the order of the Seder service. The illustrated scenes are from the Amsterdam Hagadah of 1695, which was reprinted many times throughout the 18th and 19th century, and became famous across Western Europe. This textile was likely used to decorate the wall by the dining table during the Passover holiday, to enhance the “holiday spirit”. Due to its inherent fragile nature, this is a remarkable survivor. “J. Kauffmann”, was a prolific printer and seller of Jewish prayer-books and Hebrew Bibles in Frankfurt, beginning in 1850.
