An Austrian Chanukah Lamp

An Austrian Chanukah Lamp

0.00

Made of silver, the backplate exhibiting the techniques of repousse, chasing, punch-work and casting. Fully hallmarked, second-half of the 19th century. A large number of Austrian Chanukah lamps feature the motifs shown here, namely Lions of Judah flanking the Ten Commandments with a crown above. Only the best examples were made utilizing a mixture of techniques that must be done by hand, as our example has. The spray of flowers on the backplate is most unusual, and the scrolled feet add a certain degree of elegance to the entire piece. For other examples of this type, see pages 266 and 267 of “Five Centuries of Hanukkah Lamps from The Jewish Museum: A Catalogue Raisonné”.
