A Silver Spice Tower

Russia, circa 1860. Octagonal-shaped base with large band of chased flowers connects to a fluted stem supporting three tiers of filigree wire. Turret at top features a hand-finished cast bird resting on a sphere. Flags and bells are gilt. Unusually large towers such as this example, with three turrets instead of one or two, would have been affordable only to the most affluent Jews at the time, and in Russia (as opposed to Germany), the numbers of higher- class Jews would have been few and far between.
