An American Silver Etrog Box

An American Silver Etrog Box

0.00

Made by the Wood & Hughes company, circa 1870. Realistic, organic forms expertly cast by this New York based firm. Hinged lid adorned with leaf and berry, resting on a large leaf base with handle. Fully hallmarked. The level of quality that is revealed in this piece is astounding. The base, which is in the form of a tree leaf, has a network of veins running throughout the leaf, as it does in nature. In keeping with the naturalistic theme of this piece, even the feet that the base rests on, are shown to be in the form of vines. It is evident that nearly every one of the pieces that were assembled to make this Etrog box were hand-finished after they were cast, with particular attention being paid to the leaf and berry finial at top. We strong advise that this Etrog box not be polished, as there is an original soft matte finish that has been in place since this box was made, and the passage of time makes it look ever more attractive. 19th century silver Judaica from the United States for personal use (as opposed to the Synagogue), is rare and desirable.
